Professor Judith Williamson, who teaches in the Communications Design area at Maidstone College has just given a talk on "Retrosexism" at the Guggenheim gallery in New York. This was part of a panel event focusing on the work of Richard Prince, one of the foremost US artists of recent decades, and currently the subject of a major exhibition at the Guggenheim.
Prince's work makes provocative use of imagery borrowed from popular culture, where nostalgia and sexism frequently combine. Williamson coined the term "Retrosexism" a few years ago to describe this phenomenon, and her talk sparked a lively debate as the New York audience took up the new concept with enthusiasm and vigour.
